Overview

RNU4-55P (RNA, U4 small nuclear 55, pseudogene) is a non-coding RNA pseudogene in the human genome that resembles the active genes encoding U4 small nuclear RNA, a critical spliceosomal RNA. Unlike functional snRNA genes, such as RNU4-2, which participate in mRNA splicing and are associated with neurodevelopmental disorders when mutated, RNU4-55P is a remnant or duplicate generated via retrotransposition and does not transcribe a functional RNA or protein product. Pseudogenes like RNU4-55P are prevalent in the human genome and may retain sequence similarity to functional snRNAs but lack biological activity or disease association[1][4][6]. RNU4-55P is not a receptor, enzyme, transporter, transcription factor, or any typical druggable target. It should not be confused with functional U4 snRNA genes (RNU4-2), which are important for spliceosome assembly and human neurodevelopmental disorders[5]. The inclusion of RNU4-55P as a therapeutic target or biomarker is incorrect and misleading[1][4].

Other names
RNU4-55PU4 snRNA pseudogene 55May be referred to generically as "U4 pseudogene" or "U4 small nuclear RNA pseudogene"

Mechanism of action

None applicable.

03

Biological functions

None. As a pseudogene, RNU4-55P does not encode a functional RNA and is not involved in known biological pathwaysFunctional U4 snRNA genes are involved in pre-mRNA splicing, but the pseudogene itself is not
04

Disease associations

None. There is no known disease association or functional impact for the pseudogene RNU4-55PPathogenic variants are reported for functional snRNA genes like RNU4-2, not pseudogenes
05

Safety considerations

None. There are no therapeutic safety considerations, as it is not a drug target.
06

Interacting drugs

None. No drugs are known to interact with RNU4-55P
07

Biomarkers

None. RNU4-55P is not used as a biomarker for patient selection or efficacy monitoring
