Overview

RNA, U4 small nuclear 74, pseudogene (RNU4-74P) is a pseudogene in the human genome that shares high sequence similarity to the functional U4 snRNA gene, except for a few base differences[3][4]. U4 snRNAs are essential non-coding RNAs involved in the spliceosome-mediated splicing of precursor mRNA, but pseudogenes like RNU4-74P do not participate in this process. The RNU4-74P locus was identified by screening genomic DNA for U4 sequences, but it lacks the required features and sequence integrity to produce an active snRNA. Pseudogenes such as RNU4-74P are typically considered “dead” genes, of historical or evolutionary interest, rather than therapeutic targets[3][4]. This entry is distinct from functional snRNA genes (such as RNU4-2), which are components of the spliceosome and have confirmed roles in splicing and disease. Pseudogenes generally do not encode active transcripts or proteins and are not included in therapeutic target lists[3][4].
