RNA, U4 small nuclear 79, pseudogene (RNU4-79P) is a pseudogene locus corresponding to the first 79 nucleotides of human U4 small nuclear RNA (snRNA) sequence[3]. U4 snRNA is an essential non-coding RNA component of the major spliceosome complex, responsible for pre-mRNA splicing[5]. However, pseudogenes like RNU4-79P do not produce functional RNA products and are generally considered molecular fossils, often resulting from reverse transcription and integration of processed RNA back into the genome at new sites[1][3]. The RNU4-79P locus is highly homologous to the functional U4 snRNA gene, but accumulates point mutations and is not transcribed into functional RNA[3]. These pseudogenes do not contribute to canonical spliceosome function and have no known physiological or pathological roles.
