Overview

RNU6-1068P is a processed pseudogene derived from the U6 small nuclear RNA (snRNA) gene family. U6 snRNA itself is a highly conserved, non-coding RNA that plays a central role as a catalytic component of the spliceosome, where it functions in removing introns from pre-mRNA during splicing[3][1]. However, RNU6-1068P carries sequence similarity to U6 snRNA but is non-functional—lacking essential regulatory or structural elements required for normal RNA maturation, splicing machinery assembly, or activity[2]. Pseudogenes like RNU6-1068P arise through retrotransposition (typically via LINE-1 elements) or gene duplication followed by loss of function, and serve as genomic markers of retrotransposon activity in the genome, but do not participate in canonical molecular or cellular processes[2]. Their presence does not typically have direct therapeutic implications.
