Overview

RNU6-123P, or RNA, U6 small nuclear 123, pseudogene, is one of many annotated U6 snRNA-derived pseudogenes present throughout the human genome[4][5]. Unlike canonical U6 small nuclear RNAs, which play a central role in pre-mRNA splicing within the spliceosome[1][3], pseudogenes like RNU6-123P are generally non-functional, untranslated genomic elements arising from duplication or retrotransposition events[5]. They do not produce a functional RNA or protein, and no evidence links this specific pseudogene to any biological process, disease, or therapeutic mechanism[2][5]. The “U6” small nuclear RNA genes are required for proper function of the spliceosome, facilitating the excision of introns from pre-mRNA, but pseudogenes in this family, such as RNU6-123P, are not known to participate in these or any cellular processes[1][3][5]. The existence of numerous U6 pseudogenes in the genome is a feature of vertebrates and is generally considered to be evolutionary “background” rather than functionally significant[3][5].
