Pseudogenes arise primarily from retrotransposition events where RNA is reverse-transcribed and integrated into the genome, losing its function due to lack of regulatory elements or mutations. They do not encode functional RNA or protein and may act as evolutionary markers for genome organization or retrotransposition history. The U6 snRNA itself is an essential component of the spliceosome, but RNU6-1242P is a non-functional copy that serves no independent biological role.
