Overview

RNU6-1256P (RNA, U6 small nuclear 1256, pseudogene) is a non-coding RNA pseudogene in the human genome. It is homologous to U6 small nuclear RNA (snRNA), a crucial component of the spliceosomal machinery, but RNU6-1256P itself does not produce functional RNA or protein. Unlike functional U6 snRNA genes, which are highly conserved and allow for proper pre-mRNA splicing, this pseudogene is classified as non-functional due to mutations, truncation, or lack of expression. There is no evidence to date indicating a direct biological function, disease association, or actionable therapeutic role for RNU6-1256P[4][5]. U6 snRNA is vital for splicing of pre-mRNA, but the genome contains many non-functional, pseudogenic copies like RNU6-1256P[1]. Pseudogenes in general can sometimes influence gene expression by acting as decoys or sponges for regulatory molecules (such as microRNAs), but this property is context- and gene-specific and is not demonstrated for RNU6-1256P[6]. Major biological databases (GeneCards, NCBI, Ensembl, BioGPS) list no function, protein products, or disease relevance for RNU6-1256P[4][5].
