01

Overview

RNU6-21P (RNA, U6 small nuclear 21, pseudogene) is a human pseudogene that is structurally similar to genes encoding U6 small nuclear RNA, an important non-coding RNA component of the spliceosomal machinery involved in pre-mRNA splicing[1][4][7]. However, as a pseudogene, RNU6-21P does not produce a functional RNA or protein product and is believed to be transcriptionally silent and biologically inactive. Many copies or pseudogenes of the U6 snRNA gene exist in the genome, likely reflecting the importance and high evolutionary conservation of the functional U6 snRNA, but these pseudogenes themselves have no established role in normal biology or disease processes[1][3][7].

Mechanism of action

Not applicable.

03

Biological functions

None known for this pseudogene.Functional U6 snRNAs (not pseudogenes) play crucial roles in mRNA splicing as part of the spliceosome complex, but pseudogenes such as RNU6-21P are generally transcriptionally inactive and nonfunctional.
04

Disease associations

None known. There are no known disease associations or implications for RNU6-21P specifically.Pseudogenes can sometimes be used as markers in evolutionary or genomic studies, but this is not indicative of a functional disease role.
