Overview

RNA, U6 small nuclear 212, pseudogene (RNU6-212P) is a non-coding RNA pseudogene found in the human genome. It is a copy of the U6 small nuclear RNA (snRNA) gene that has lost its typical function through evolutionary mutation. Functional U6 snRNA is an essential RNA component of the spliceosome, participating directly in the catalysis of pre-mRNA splicing by aligning the catalytic site within the spliceosome complex. However, RNU6-212P is classified as a pseudogene, meaning it does not produce an active RNA or play any known role in cellular machinery, nor is it a recognized therapeutic target. There are many U6-derived pseudogenes in the human genome that do not contribute to splicing or other regulatory functions. Pseudogenes can sometimes act as regulatory RNA species in rare cases (for example, acting as microRNA sponges or competing endogenous RNAs), but there is no evidence that RNU6-212P has such functions or clinical relevance. It is mainly of interest in genomic annotation, rather than in molecular therapeutics, diagnostics, or clinical targeting.
