Overview

RNU6-24P (RNA, U6 small nuclear 24, pseudogene) is a genomic sequence derived from the U6 family of small nuclear RNAs (snRNAs), which are components of the spliceosome machinery responsible for splicing pre-messenger RNA in eukaryotic cells. However, as a pseudogene, RNU6-24P is a non-functional, processed duplication that does not produce a functional snRNA. Pseudogenes like RNU6-24P are often formed by retrotransposition and do not participate in normal cellular processes or splicing. As such, RNU6-24P lacks biological activity, clinical significance, or potential as a therapeutic target, and is primarily of interest in evolutionary genomics and studies of genome architecture. Although functional U6 snRNAs are commonly used as reference genes in molecular biology (e.g., RNU6-2), pseudogenes such as RNU6-24P have no such use and do not generate RNA products involved in gene regulation or disease. The presence of numerous U6 pseudogenes in the genome is thought to reflect retrotransposon activity rather than serving a biological function.
