It does not code for a functional protein or RNA but may be transcribed in some contexts. U6 snRNA, the functional parent gene, is an essential component of the spliceosome, which catalyzes the removal of introns from pre-mRNA in eukaryotic cells, but pseudogenes like RNU6-309P are typically nonfunctional relics arising from gene duplication or retrotransposition events. Some pseudogenes can be transcribed and may regulate gene expression indirectly by acting as competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs) or producing regulatory RNAs (siRNAs or antisense RNAs), influencing gene networks or disease processes[1][2][4][6]. However, there is no specific evidence that RNU6-309P itself has a well-characterized biological or clinical role.
