Overview

RNU6-338P (RNA, U6 small nuclear 338, pseudogene) is a non-protein-coding pseudogene derived from the U6 small nuclear RNA gene family. Pseudogenes are sequences that resemble functional genes but typically lack their biological activity due to mutations or truncations and are generally considered non-functional in terms of encoding proteins. However, some pseudogenes, including those of the U6 family, may still be transcribed and can play regulatory roles at the RNA level. These roles include acting as antisense RNAs to modulate the expression of their functional counterparts, serving as precursors to small regulatory RNAs (such as siRNAs), or functioning as competing endogenous RNAs that sponge microRNAs, thereby affecting gene regulation networks. Although some pseudogene-derived RNAs have been implicated indirectly in diseases such as cancer by influencing the expression of associated genes, RNU6-338P itself has no established direct role in disease or as a therapeutic target, and there are no drugs that interact with it. It belongs to the broader families of non-coding RNAs and pseudogenes, specifically related to small nuclear RNAs involved in the spliceosome complex.
