Target intelligence / Profile preview

RNA, U6 small nuclear 388, pseudogene (RNU6-388P)

Target
RNU6-388P
Molecular classification
Pseudogene, Non-coding RNA
01

Overview

RNU6-388P encodes a processed pseudogene corresponding to U6 small nuclear RNA, one of many U6-related pseudogenes present in the human genome[4][5]. Unlike functional U6 snRNA, which is a core component of the spliceosome (the molecular machine responsible for removing introns from pre-mRNA in eukaryotes)[1][3], RNU6-388P does not produce a functional RNA product and does not participate in pre-mRNA splicing. Pseudogenes are generally regarded as evolutionary remnants and typically lack biological function, though some pseudogenes can exert regulatory effects by producing non-coding RNAs that influence gene expression or act as molecular sponges for microRNAs[6]. There is currently no evidence to suggest that RNU6-388P itself is transcribed or has such regulatory activity. It is not considered a therapeutic target, enzyme, transporter, or receptor.

Biological functions

None established for this specific pseudogeneU6 snRNA (the parent gene) is crucial for pre-mRNA splicing as a component of the spliceosomepseudogenes are generally nonfunctional
03

Disease associations

Other (no established direct role in disease for this pseudogene)More broadly, pseudogene-expressed non-coding RNAs can influence gene regulation and have been implicated in some cancers and epigenetic regulation, though there is no evidence for this at RNU6-388P
