Overview

RNA, U6 small nuclear 402, pseudogene (RNU6-402P) is a processed pseudogene of the U6 small nuclear RNA (snRNA) family found in the human genome[2][3]. U6 snRNA is a noncoding, uridine-rich RNA essential for nuclear intron splicing as part of the spliceosome complex[1]. However, RNU6-402P does not produce a functional RNA or protein; it is a "pseudogene," meaning it is a DNA sequence derived from the parental U6 snRNA gene but has lost its original function due to mutation or loss of regulatory elements[2][3]. Pseudogenes like RNU6-402P are created largely by retrotransposition—a mechanism in which the RNA of parent genes is reverse-transcribed and inserted back into the genome—often with the involvement of LINE-1 (L1) elements[1][3]. RNU6-402P and other snRNA pseudogenes serve as evolutionary markers of retrotransposition dynamics and genome organization but are not considered therapeutic drug targets, nor are they involved in recognized biological or disease processes[3].
