Overview

RNA, U6 small nuclear 42, pseudogene (RNU6-42P) is a sequence in the human genome similar to the canonical U6 small nuclear RNA gene but rendered non-protein-coding and non-functional by mutations or rearrangements. U6 snRNA is a highly conserved and essential component of the spliceosome responsible for pre-mRNA splicing, with many functional copies and pseudogenes scattered through the vertebrate genome[7]. The RNU6-42P locus is one such pseudogene, and while its functional counterparts (canonical U6 snRNA genes) participate in crucial splicing activities, no data support a role for RNU6-42P transcripts or encoded RNA in splicing or any other biological process[1]. Pseudogenes are generally catalogued for informational completeness and do not encode proteins or active RNAs in most cases.
