Overview

RNA, U6 small nuclear 490, pseudogene (RNU6-490P) is a genomic locus classified as a *processed pseudogene* derived from U6 small nuclear RNA (snRNA)[5][2][4]. U6 snRNA itself is a central component of the spliceosome, essential for the splicing of pre-mRNA in eukaryotes[1][3]; however, RNU6-490P represents a defective genomic copy that does not encode a functional molecule. Pseudogenes like RNU6-490P arise from retrotransposition or duplication of their parental genes and often display structural features such as absence of introns, scattered mismatches, or truncations[5][2]. While the parent U6 snRNA is highly conserved and vital for splicing, pseudogenes are usually transcriptionally silent and lack established biological, therapeutic, or disease relevance[2][5][3]. There is no evidence that RNU6-490P is a receptor, enzyme, or other canonical drug target, and there are no known drugs, mechanisms, biomarkers, or safety concerns related to this locus. Note on molecular context: The abundance of U6 snRNA pseudogenes in the genome reflects retrotranspositional dynamics but does not confer biological activity.[5] Functional characterization or study of pseudogenes is mainly useful for evolutionary or genomic annotation—not therapeutic modulation or biomarker development.[2][4][5]
