Target intelligence / Profile preview

RNA, U6 small nuclear 556, pseudogene (RNU6-556P)

Target
RNU6-556P
Molecular classification
Pseudogene, Small nuclear RNA (snRNA) pseudogene
01

Overview

RNU6-556P is a pseudogene corresponding to the U6 small nuclear RNA (snRNA) gene family in humans. U6 snRNA is an essential component of the spliceosome, a complex responsible for pre-mRNA splicing, but pseudogenes like RNU6-556P do not encode functional RNAs. Pseudogenes are generally considered non-coding genomic DNA that resemble functional genes but have lost their protein-coding ability or functionality due to mutations. However, in some cases, pseudogenes can play regulatory roles or act as decoys for microRNAs. There is no evidence that RNU6-556P encodes a functional product or has distinct biological or clinical relevance[2][3]. The existence of many U6 snRNA pseudogenes reflects the evolutionary importance and prevalence of the functional U6 snRNA gene in the human genome[3].
