RNU6-582P is annotated as a pseudogene related to the U6 small nuclear RNA (snRNA) family, specifically a non-functional copy of a U6 snRNA gene in humans[7]. Pseudogenes are genomic DNA sequences similar to normal genes but are non-functional; they do not encode active products. RNU6-582P, like other U6 pseudogenes, retains sequence similarity to the functional U6 snRNA gene but accumulates mutations preventing it from participation in snRNA and spliceosome activity[7][5]. U6 snRNAs themselves are essential components of the spliceosome complex responsible for mRNA splicing, but pseudogenes such as RNU6-582P do not contribute to this activity[1][3][5]. Pseudogenes in general may sometimes play roles in gene regulation or RNA-based regulation mechanisms, but there is no evidence for such a function specific to RNU6-582P[6].
