Overview

RNA, U6 small nuclear 588, pseudogene (RNU6-588P) is a pseudogene found in the human genome, identified by the gene symbol RNU6-588P[1][7]. Pseudogenes such as this are non-functional sequences that resemble functional genes—in this case, U6 small nuclear RNAs, which are essential for pre-mRNA splicing as components of the spliceosome[8]. Unlike functional U6 snRNA, RNU6-588P contains sequence homology to the authentic gene but harbors mutations or deletions that prevent it from acting as a component of the spliceosome, and it does not produce a functional RNA product[6][1]. There is no evidence that RNU6-588P functions as a protein-coding gene, as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or other traditional drug target class. Although some pseudogenes are known to be transcribed and may have regulatory roles, there are currently no data supporting a biological or disease-modifying role for RNU6-588P itself[1][3][7].

03

Biological functions

Lacks direct biological function (non-functional pseudogene)Related U6 small nuclear RNA (snRNA) genes are involved in mRNA splicing (the spliceosome), but the pseudogene itself does not code for a functional RNA or proteinPseudogenes may participate in regulatory mechanisms such as acting as competing endogenous RNAs, miRNA sponges, or sources of regulatory small RNAs in some contexts

Disease associations

No direct implication in disease for this specific pseudogenePseudogenes in general can have roles as regulatory RNAs in cancer and other diseases through indirect mechanisms
