Overview

RNA, U6 small nuclear 706, pseudogene (RNU6-706P), is a **pseudogene** derived from the highly conserved U6 small nuclear RNA (snRNA) gene family, which encodes the RNA components of the spliceosomal U6 snRNP[1][5]. Like other U6 snRNA pseudogenes, RNU6-706P has lost its ability to code for a functional snRNA through accumulation of disabling mutations or retrotransposition and therefore does not participate in the splicing of pre-mRNA[2][5]. While some pseudogenes can regulate the expression of their parental genes or act as competing endogenous RNAs, there is no evidence that RNU6-706P itself is functionally active or implicated in disease or therapeutic targeting[2]. Its presence mainly reflects genomic evolutionary history and retrotransposon activity involving U6 snRNA sequences[5]. **Note:** - The canonical, functional U6 snRNA is indispensable for pre-mRNA splicing in eukaryotes, forming a core catalytic component of the spliceosome[1][3]. - RNU6-706P, as a pseudogene, does not encode a spliceosomal RNA and is not considered a drug target or biomarker.

Biological functions

No direct function (as a pseudogene)May regulate parental gene expression via competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) mechanisms, antisense regulation, or as a source of small RNAs in specific rare cases[2]Parental gene (U6 snRNA, not this pseudogene) is essential for RNA splicing[1][3]

Disease associations

Other (pseudogenes can play regulatory roles in gene networks, cancer, and other diseases by affecting expression of parental or other genes, but RNU6-706P specific information is unavailable)[2]
