RNU6-742P is a pseudogene homolog of the gene encoding U6 small nuclear RNA, a highly conserved noncoding RNA essential for the splicing machinery (spliceosome) in eukaryotic cells[1][2][3]. Pseudogenes like RNU6-742P are genomic sequences similar to known genes but generally regarded as nonfunctional; they typically arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events and acquire disabling mutations[4]. Unlike the functional U6 snRNA genes, RNU6-742P is not known to be transcribed as a functional RNA component of the spliceosome, and there is no evidence it encodes protein or acts as a therapeutic target[2][3][4]. In rare circumstances, some pseudogenes can be transcribed and participate in regulatory RNA networks, but there is no evidence for such a role for RNU6-742P specifically[2][4].
