Overview

RNU6-978P is a processed pseudogene derived from the U6 small nuclear RNA (snRNA) gene family[1][2][4]. The U6 snRNA is an essential component of the spliceosome—the complex responsible for excising introns from pre-mRNA during RNA splicing in eukaryotic nuclei[3][5]. Functional U6 snRNA is highly conserved and fundamental to gene expression; however, the RNU6-978P pseudogene does not produce a functional RNA or protein, as it is a non-coding, likely non-expressed genomic sequence. Processed pseudogenes like RNU6-978P are formed by retrotransposition, often mediated by retrotransposon elements such as LINE-1 (L1), which copy RNA intermediates of cellular RNA molecules, including non-coding RNAs like U6, back into the genome[2]. These pseudogenes lack regulatory elements and the ability to be transcribed or processed as the original gene. They have no known biological function but can be useful in studies of genome evolution and retrotransposition dynamics[2]. There are many U6 pseudogenes in the human genome, indicative of their retrotranspositional history[2][3]. There are no drugs, clinical biomarkers, or therapeutic activities associated with this pseudogene, and it is neither a therapeutic target nor implicated in disease[1][2][4].
