RNU6-983P is a human pseudogene originating from the U6 small nuclear RNA (snRNA) gene family. U6 snRNA is a small non-coding RNA component of the spliceosome and plays a crucial role in processing pre-mRNA by facilitating intron removal through splicing[1][3]. Pseudogenes like RNU6-983P are genetic sequences that resemble functional genes but have lost their gene expression or protein-coding ability due to mutations, deletions, or rearrangements. The sequence of this pseudogene shows high similarity to genuine U6 snRNA but does not participate in the biogenesis or function of snRNPs and the spliceosome[4]. It may contain repeat structures or unique sequence features arising during human genome evolution[4]. Pseudogenes are not generally expressed and do not contribute to cellular or organismal functions.
