Overview

RNU7-148P is a pseudogene derived from the functional RNA, U7 small nuclear RNA (RNU7-1), which plays a critical role in the processing of replication-dependent histone pre-mRNAs in the U7 snRNP complex. The functional U7 snRNA is required for correct histone mRNA maturation, and mutations in the true RNU7-1 gene have been associated with neurodevelopmental disorders such as Aicardi-Goutières syndrome, but pseudogenes such as RNU7-148P do not produce a functional RNA and are presumed to have no biological activity or role in disease. The RNU7-148P locus is derived from the active snRNA gene but is classified as a pseudogene, which means it does not produce a functional molecule and should not be confused with the active RNU7-1 snRNA gene, which is involved in histone pre-mRNA processing. The naming convention for small nuclear RNA genes designates functional genes with root “RNU” and a numerical identifier, while most loci with higher numbering (such as "-148P") correspond to pseudogenes. If referencing therapeutic targets or disease roles, be careful to distinguish between functional snRNA genes (e.g., RNU7-1) and pseudogenes such as RNU7-148P, which have no established functional or pathological significance.
