RNA, U7 small nuclear 51 pseudogene (RNU7-51P) is classified as a pseudogene—a genomically encoded sequence resembling the functional U7 small nuclear RNA gene, but lacking biological activity and not producing a functional transcript or protein[1][5]. The biologically active homolog, RNA, U7 small nuclear 1 (RNU7-1), encodes the U7 snRNA, which functions as part of the U7 small nuclear ribonucleoprotein (snRNP) complex essential for processing histone pre-mRNAs, thereby ensuring proper histone biosynthesis and DNA replication fidelity[2][3][4][6]. Mutations in RNU7-1—but not pseudogenes such as RNU7-51P—can cause Aicardi-Goutières syndrome, a severe early-onset neuroinflammatory disorder[2][3][6]. RNU7-51P contains no known protein-coding capacity, no documented biological function, and is not considered relevant for drug discovery or therapeutic targeting[1][5].
