RNA, variant U1 small nuclear 2A (RNVU1-2A) is a transcript belonging to the family of variant U1 snRNAs, which are noncoding RNAs transcribed by RNA polymerase II. The canonical U1 snRNA is a key component of the spliceosome, facilitating the removal of introns from pre-mRNA. Variant U1 snRNAs, including RNVU1-2A, differ from canonical U1 at several nucleotide positions and may be expressed in a tissue- or cell-type-specific manner. They are thought to contribute to the fine-tuning of alternative splicing and to the regulation of transcript isoforms, particularly during stem cell differentiation and cell fate decisions. Most vU1 snRNAs, including RNVU1-2A, show lower expression and limited ability to substitute for U1 in splicing assays; their biological roles remain incompletely characterized, but imbalance between canonical U1 and variants has been associated with motor neuron disease and possibly other neurodevelopmental disorders.
