Overview

RNA, variant U1 small nuclear 3 (RNVU1-3) is a non-coding small nuclear RNA (snRNA) belonging to the U1 snRNA variant family, which are encoded by "class I pseudogenes" of U1 snRNA in the human genome. Like canonical U1 snRNA, variant U1 (vU1) molecules participate in the spliceosome, a complex responsible for precise removal of introns from pre-mRNA during gene expression. Although vU1s were once believed to be non-functional pseudogenes, recent work demonstrates that many are transcribed, processed, incorporated into RNP complexes, and regulate alternative splicing or mRNA processing for specific gene subsets, particularly during development or in specific tissues. Each vU1 has unique sequence differences; however, not all have the same functional capacity as canonical U1 snRNA, and their impact is often subtler or context-dependent. There is currently no evidence that RNVU1-3 is used as a specific drug target or disease biomarker.

Disease associations

There is emerging evidence that altered expression of variant U1 snRNAs can impact gene expression and may contribute to pathophysiological changes, such as altered cell proliferation and possible links to certain cancers, but there are no well-established, direct disease connections for individual variants like RNVU1-3
