RNA, variant U1 small nuclear 8 (RNVU1-8) is a member of the U1 snRNA multigene family. U1 snRNAs are noncoding RNAs that form the RNA backbone of U1 small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs), the essential components of the spliceosome responsible for recognizing the 5′ splice sites in pre-mRNA and facilitating intron removal and exon ligation[2][4]. The variant U1 snRNAs, including RNVU1-8 (vU1.8), rarely reach expression levels comparable to canonical U1 snRNA, with endogenous levels notably low[2]. Like other U1 snRNAs, RNVU1-8 can undergo maturation, nuclear localization, and snRNP assembly but appears severely limited in its ability to catalyze splicing when tested experimentally[2]. Some evidence points to potential involvement in alternative splicing and regulation of polyadenylation, but these roles are not well established for this specific variant[2]. There are no documented roles in disease, no known drug interactions, nor use as a therapeutic target, biomarker, or safety concerns in clinical settings.
