Target intelligence / Profile preview

RNA binding motif protein, Y-linked, family 1, member B (RBMY1B)

Target
RBMY1B
Molecular classification
RNA binding protein, Splicing factor, RNA recognition motif (RRM) protein
01

Overview

RBMY1B is a member of the Y-linked RNA-binding motif protein family found in a gene cluster in the AZFb azoospermia factor region of the Y chromosome. The protein contains an N-terminal RNA recognition motif (RRM) and a C-terminal region with multiple SRGY boxes (serine, arginine, glycine, tyrosine repeats). RBMY1B is primarily expressed in the testis, where it is believed to function as a splicing factor during spermatogenesis. Multiple closely related paralogs exist, with some being functional and others pseudogenes. Recent research indicates RBMY1B may play complex roles in liver cancer biology, with both tumor-suppressive and oncogenic properties depending on its context and expression, but it is not considered a canonical drug target or receptor.

Mechanism of action

Not applicable; no drugs target this protein as a direct mechanism of action.

03

Biological functions

RNA bindingRegulation of mRNA splicingRegulation of gene expression, particularly during spermatogenesis
04

Disease associations

Male infertility (notably in Y chromosome microdeletion syndromes and azoospermia)Potential context-dependent role in liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma) as both an inhibitor of cell proliferation and as a long-term oncogene
05

Safety considerations

Not applicable. No safety issues identified, as it is not a therapeutic target
06

Biomarkers

Potential biomarker for male infertility and azoospermia (loss or dysregulation of expression)Potential prognostic biomarker in liver cancer—high expression is associated with poor prognosis
