Overview

RNA binding motif protein 19 (RBM19) is a nucleolar protein containing six RNA recognition motifs (RRMs)[1][4][5]. It is involved in RNA metabolism processes such as splicing, transport, translation, and stability. RBM19 plays a vital role in the regulation of ribosome biogenesis and is essential for vertebrate digestive organ development, acting in a cell-autonomous manner to promote gut and exocrine pancreas cytodifferentiation[1]. Loss-of-function of RBM19 leads to organ hypoplasia, while overexpression causes organ overgrowth. Functional studies also indicate it is important in embryo pre-implantation development[1][5]. Although the broader family of RBM proteins is associated with cancer biology and may be relevant as therapeutic targets or biomarkers due to their involvement in RNA processing and cell proliferation, there is currently insufficient evidence to classify RBM19 specifically as a therapeutic target or to document drug interactions[2].
