Overview

RNA binding motif protein 23 (RBM23) is a member of the U2AF-like family of RNA binding proteins that functions as both a transcription coactivator and a pre-mRNA splicing factor[1][3][6]. RBM23 interacts with steroid nuclear receptors, localizes to promoters of steroid-responsive genes, and increases transcription of steroid-responsive reporters in a hormone-dependent manner[1][6]. It is implicated in steroid receptor-dependent regulation of alternative splicing and contains multiple RNA recognition motifs (RRMs) important for binding mRNA and interaction with spliceosomal components. Multiple transcript variants encode different isoforms of this protein; it is expressed in many tissues and has been detected in various human cancers, with some data suggesting potential prognostic significance[1][5]. No specific drugs or biomarkers are currently established for RBM23, and it is not considered a direct therapeutic target, but it may be relevant for studies of gene regulation, alternative splicing, and cancer biology.
