RNA binding motif protein 38 (RBM38) is an RNA-binding protein that contains a single RNA recognition motif (RRM) and is best known for its functions in modulating mRNA stability and alternative splicing. RBM38 is a direct target of the p53 family and regulates mRNA translation and stability of several p53 pathway components (including CDKN1A/p21, p73, GDF15, Mdm2, and HuR), thereby influencing cell cycle progression, apoptosis, senescence, and cellular differentiation[1][3]. It plays an essential role in hematopoiesis and is implicated in tumor suppression and aging in vivo[1]. RBM38 is also a critical host factor for the splicing of specific viral pre-mRNAs, exemplified by its necessary function in human parvovirus B19 infection[2]. Dysregulation of RBM38 expression is observed in several cancer types, where it may act either as a tumor suppressor or oncogene depending on cellular context[1][3].
