Overview

RNA-binding motif protein 4 (RBM4) is an evolutionarily conserved RNA-binding protein containing two RNA recognition motifs (RRMs) and a CCHC-type zinc finger, predominantly involved in regulating alternative splicing of pre-mRNAs and modulating translation in response to cellular and environmental cues[1][2][4]. RBM4 is found primarily in the nucleus but dynamically shuttles to the cytoplasm, particularly under stress conditions, accumulating in granules associated with RNA processing[3][4]. It can function as both an activator and repressor of exon selection, playing a role in muscle and pancreatic cell differentiation and in the regulation of circadian rhythm, and influences IRES-mediated translation under stress[1][2][3][4][5]. While RBM4 has been linked to certain diseases through dysregulation or mutation, such as Down syndrome and some neurodegenerative conditions, it is not generally considered a direct therapeutic target or receptor, but rather a multifunctional RNA-processing factor involved in fundamental aspects of gene expression regulation[1][2][4][5].
