Overview

RNA binding motif protein 7 (RBM7) is a human RNA-binding protein encoded by the _RBM7_ gene. It is best characterized as a core component of the nuclear exosome targeting (NEXT) complex, which operates in the nucleus to direct specific non-coding RNAs, including promoter-upstream transcripts, enhancer RNAs, and certain extended RNA products, for degradation by the nuclear exosome[1][2][6]. RBM7 contains an RNA recognition motif (RRM) that binds with selectivity for uridine-rich sequences and interacts with proteins such as ZCCHC8 and hMTR4 as part of the NEXT complex, as well as spliceosomal components like SAP145[1]. Through these interactions, RBM7 facilitates the coupling of RNA processing, degradation, and possibly alternative splicing events, although it is not a general splicing factor[1]. There are currently no clinically approved drugs targeting RBM7, nor is it widely considered a therapeutic receptor, enzyme, or transporter.
