Overview

RNA binding motif protein Y-linked family 1 member A1 pseudogene (RBMY1A1 pseudogene) is a nonfunctional genomic sequence on the Y chromosome that resembles the protein-coding gene RBMY1A1, which encodes a protein involved in RNA binding and spermatogenesis[4][5][6][7]. As a pseudogene, it does not encode a functional protein product due to sequence mutations or loss of regulatory elements, distinguishing it from active genes. While the RBMY1A1 protein is important for sperm development and pre-mRNA splicing, the pseudogene copies are generally “genomic fossils” without a known protein-coding function, although some pseudogenes may be transcribed and participate in gene regulation through non-coding RNAs[2][6][8]. There is no evidence that this pseudogene is a therapeutic target, nor are there drugs targeting it, and it is not commonly used as a disease biomarker or associated with known safety concerns.

Biological functions

Other (no direct functional biological activity; may participate in regulatory RNA networks as some pseudogenes can be transcribed and may have regulatory roles[2][6][8])
03

Disease associations

Other (not directly implicated as a disease-causing entity; parental RBMY1A1 protein is associated with spermatogenesis and azoospermia, but pseudogene forms are generally not assigned disease roles[5][7])
