Overview

RNA-binding motif protein Y-linked family 1 member D (RBMY1D) is a testis-specific, Y chromosome-encoded RNA-binding protein that contains an N-terminal RNA recognition motif (RRM) and several C-terminal SRGY (serine, arginine, glycine, tyrosine) motifs[1][4][5]. It belongs to a family of related RBMY genes located in the AZFb azoospermia factor region of the Y chromosome[3][5]. RBMY1D and its paralogs are essential for normal sperm development and act as pre-mRNA splicing regulators, participating in the regulation of alternative splicing events during spermatogenesis[1][3]. It recognizes RNA stem-loop structures in a sequence- and shape-dependent manner via its RRM domain[1]. Defects or deletions affecting the RBMY gene family are strongly associated with male infertility, particularly azoospermia and Y chromosome microdeletion syndromes[3]. There is currently no evidence that RBMY1D is a direct therapeutic target or that there are drugs modulating its function.
