RNA binding motif protein Y-linked family 1 member E (RBMY1E) is a member of the RBMY gene family located on the Y chromosome and encodes a protein containing an RNA recognition motif and SRGY boxes, which are features typical of RNA-binding proteins involved in splicing regulation[4]. Although specific molecular functions for RBMY1E are not well established, RBMY family proteins are implicated in pre-mRNA splicing during spermatogenesis and are required for normal sperm development; loss or mutation leads to some forms of azoospermia (male infertility)[1][4]. Most closely related RBMY gene family members are found in the AZFb azoospermia factor region of chromosome Y, with some being functional and others considered pseudogenes[4].
