Overview

RNA-binding motif protein Y-linked family 1 member J (RBMY1J) is a testis-specific RNA-binding protein encoded on the Y chromosome (AZFb region), containing an RNA-binding domain at the N-terminus and four SRGY (serine, arginine, glycine, tyrosine) boxes at the C-terminus. The protein acts as a key splicing factor required for spermatogenesis by participating in the regulation of pre-mRNA splicing in developing male germ cells. RBMY1J is expressed almost exclusively in adult testis, and its function is essential for sperm motility and fertility. Variations in copy number of this gene are associated with reduced sperm motility and increased risk for male infertility, specifically forms characterized by asthenozoospermia. Although there are several closely related paralogs (most notably RBMY1A1 and RBMY1F), the RBMY1 family as a whole is critical for the regulation of gene expression during male gamete production and maintenance of male reproductive capacity.
