Overview

RNA-binding protein FXR1 is a member of the Fragile X-related (FXR) protein family that functions as a key regulator of RNA metabolism, including mRNA translation, stability, and miRNA biogenesis, primarily through its RNA-binding domains (KH and RGG motifs)[4][1]. It is essential for embryonic and postnatal development, with wide expression especially in the brain, muscle, and various other tissues[3][4]. FXR1 plays crucial roles in synaptic function, neuronal development, sleep and stress responses, and is implicated in cancer through the regulation of oncogenic mRNA stability and interaction with signaling molecules (e.g., PRKCI and ECT2 in lung cancer)[2][1]. FXR1 overexpression correlates with poor prognosis in several cancers and is under exploration as a novel therapeutic target and biomarker[2][4]. Loss of function or alterations in FXR1 expression contribute to neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders as well as malignancies[3][2].
