Overview

RNA interference (RNAi) is a conserved biological process in which small RNA molecules mediate the sequence-specific suppression of gene expression, primarily by targeting messenger RNA (mRNA) for degradation or translational repression. This mechanism is triggered by double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) and operates in a wide range of organisms. Synthetic siRNAs can be designed to silence virtually any gene with known sequence information, making it an attractive tool for functional genomics studies, targeted knockdown of disease-related genes, and potential therapies.
