As a pseudogene, this locus results from the duplication or retrotransposition of RCL1 but has accumulated mutations or structural variants that prevent expression of an active protein product. By standard definition, pseudogenes such as this are genetic relics and have no canonical biochemical function within cells. Rarely, some pseudogenes may influence other genes via RNA-based regulatory mechanisms, but there is no evidence for this in the case of ENSG00000265713.
