Overview

RNF213 antisense RNA 1 (RNF213-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA transcribed from the antisense strand of the RNF213 gene locus. It does not encode a protein but may regulate the expression of the RNF213 protein-coding gene via antisense-mediated mechanisms such as transcriptional interference, chromatin modification, or RNA duplex formation. Antisense lncRNAs like RNF213-AS1 often influence gene expression locally (cis) or, less frequently, in trans. The RNF213-AS1 locus is located on human chromosome 17q25.3, and while RNF213 antisense RNA 1 has been genetically annotated, its specific biological function, disease involvement, and drug targeting relevance remain largely uncharacterized[3][4]. This transcript should not be confused with the RNF213 protein, which is an E3 ubiquitin ligase associated with moyamoya disease and immunity[1][2]. Note: RNF213-AS1 is distinct from the protein-coding gene RNF213 ("Ring finger protein 213"), which is a validated disease gene and therapeutic target in some contexts. RNF213-AS1 itself, as a long non-coding antisense RNA, is not generally regarded as a direct pharmacological target or disease biomarker at this time[4].
