Overview

RNF217 antisense RNA 1 (RNF217-AS1; also known as STL or six-twelve leukemia) is a long non-coding RNA gene transcribed in a head-to-head orientation with the protein-coding RNF217 gene. It shares a promoter and regulatory region with RNF217, a gene associated with leukemia through genomic aberrations and deregulated expression. Translocation events involving the RNF217/STL locus are implicated in hematologic malignancies, but RNF217-AS1 itself has no well-defined protein product or established biological function. Its significance is primarily as a genomic element in a leukemia-associated region rather than a classical molecular target for drug discovery. Do not confuse RNF217-AS1 (the non-coding RNA) with RNF217 (Ring Finger Protein 217, a protein-coding E3 ubiquitin ligase implicated in apoptosis and leukemia mechanisms). No direct evidence suggests RNF217-AS1 itself is a validated protein target, therapeutic target, or biomarker. RNF217-AS1 (STL, six-twelve leukemia) is a long non-coding RNA at a locus recurrently altered in leukemia, but currently it is not an established molecular therapeutic target nor is there sufficient evidence to assign it classical target biology beyond its genomic context.
