RNY1 pseudogene 16 is a noncoding RNA pseudogene homologous to the functional RNY1 (Ro60-Associated Y1 RNA) gene, which encodes one of the small Y RNAs forming part of Ro ribonucleoproteins detectable in serum from patients with autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus and Sjögren syndrome. Pseudogenes such as RNY1P16 are generally defined as nonfunctional genomic sequences that arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events and can exhibit regulatory capacities at the RNA level, though they do not code for proteins. Some pseudogenes are transcribed into RNA and may modulate gene expression via mechanisms such as competitive endogenous RNA activity, acting as miRNA decoys, or producing regulatory small RNAs. There is no current evidence that RNY1P16 directly participates in disease or is a therapeutic target, nor that it interacts with known drugs. It is best classified broadly as a transcribed noncoding RNA pseudogene with potential (but unproven) regulatory roles, as is typical for members of its class.
