01

Overview

Rod-derived Cone Viability Factor (RdCVF) is a protein secreted by rod photoreceptors in the retina. Encoded by the *NXNL1* gene, it is a truncated thioredoxin that promotes the survival and function of cone photoreceptor cells, particularly under degenerative conditions such as retinitis pigmentosa (RP). RdCVF binds to Basigin-1 (BSG1) on cones, increasing glucose uptake and stimulating aerobic glycolysis. Loss of RdCVF due to rod degeneration contributes to secondary cone death in RP, making it a therapeutic target.
