Rod-derived Cone Viability Factor Long Form (RdCVFL)

Target
RdCVFL
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Thioredoxin-like oxidoreductase
01

Overview

Rod-derived cone viability factor long form (RdCVFL) is an enzymatically active thioredoxin protein encoded by the *NXNL1* gene. It functions primarily within photoreceptor cells as a redox-active enzyme, protecting them from oxidative stress and promoting cone survival, particularly in conditions of retinal degeneration such as retinitis pigmentosa. Its mechanism involves reducing oxidized cysteines on target proteins, such as pyruvate kinase M2 (PKM2), restoring glycolytic flux and cellular function.
