ROS1 is a receptor tyrosine kinase that plays a role in epithelial cell differentiation and regionalization. Somatic chromosomal fusions involving ROS1 generate chimeric oncoproteins that drive various cancers, most notably non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Tumors driven by oncogenic ROS1 fusions are sensitive to targeted therapies such as crizotinib.
