Rotavirus (RV)

Target
RV
Molecular classification
Virus, RNA virus, dsRNA virus, Reoviridae

Overview

Rotavirus is a highly contagious, double-stranded RNA virus and the leading cause of severe diarrheal disease among infants and young children worldwide. It primarily infects enterocytes lining the villi of the small intestine, leading to malabsorption and diarrhea. Key viral proteins, such as VP4, VP7, and NSP4, are critical for cell attachment, immune recognition, and pathogenesis, respectively. Transmission occurs via the fecal-oral route, and prevention is primarily achieved through vaccination.
