The rotavirus capsid is a complex, triple-layered structure composed of VP2 (core), VP6 (middle), and VP7 (outer) proteins. VP6, the most abundant and antigenically prominent capsid protein, forms the middle layer and is responsible for the group-specific serotyping of rotaviruses. The outer layer contains VP7, a glycoprotein, and spike-like protruding VP4, both crucial for virus infectivity and neutralization by host antibodies. Capsid proteins are structurally essential for viral integrity and play significant roles in virion assembly, immune recognition, and the efficacy of existing vaccines against rotavirus infection.
