Overview

Rotavirus G4 reassortant is a live, attenuated virus that serves as a critical antigenic component of the pentavalent rotavirus vaccine, RotaTeq. It is engineered as a human-bovine reassortant, typically utilizing the bovine rotavirus strain WC3 as a genetic backbone to express the human G4 serotype VP7 outer capsid glycoprotein [4, 16]. The primary purpose of this reassortant is to elicit a protective immune response in infants, specifically by inducing the production of neutralizing antibodies against the G4 serotype, which is a frequent cause of severe pediatric gastroenteritis [1, 2]. By presenting the G4 antigen in a non-pathogenic context, the reassortant prepares the host immune system to recognize and neutralize wild-type rotavirus strains of the same serotype [20]. This vaccination strategy significantly reduces the risk of severe diarrhea, dehydration, and hospitalizations associated with rotavirus infections in the pediatric population [5, 18].
